IceQube - thermal desalination in Antarctica
Multi-stage flash (MSF) distillation
When Australia's Antarctic Division wanted to pioneer environmental remediation of old waste sites in Antarctica, they turned to Melbourne University to develop & implement affordable waste-water treatment solutions.
Having already used H2AU's small vacuum distillers in Antarctica over several years, they also turned to H2AU to custom-design & build a packaged thermal desalination plant for parts of the remediation, & other Anarctic applications.
H2AU developed IceQube - a compact, portable multi-stage flash (MSF) vacuum evaporator, which uses cold (-2°C) Antarctic sea-water as a coolant & a diesel water heater for make-up energy. IceQube runs off diesel gen-sets, is PLC automated with UPS backup for freeze protection, & recovers/recycles most of its energy requirements internally. Materials are all marine-grade & engineering thermoplastics with 90/10 cupro-nickel, enhanced surface heat exchange tubes.
